The Kathmandu Valley's hitis, or dhunge dharas, are far more than decorative fountains. They are engineered water machines, built centuries before modern plumbing, that still deliver drinking water to thousands of households today.
A hiti is a sunken stone water spout set into a carved pit below street level. Unlike the wooden pillars and struts seen in the Valley's temples, hitis are predominantly carved from stone, with wood and baked clay reserved for the hidden conduit network that feeds them. Water emerges through an ornately carved spout usually a mythical hiti manga, a crocodile-like creature regarded as the vahana of the goddess Ganga.

Because every stage relies on elevation and gravity alone, the system needs no pumps or external energy a design suited perfectly to a mountainous terrain where 70% of the land slopes naturally downhill.
Hitis were constructed from locally sourced stone, wood, brick, and clay, using techniques that made them largely self-maintaining. Maintenance was often biological rather than mechanical: blocked drains were cleared by sending live frogs or snakes through the channels to dislodge sediment with their movement.
Social institutions called guthis community trusts funded by donated farmland historically financed annual cleaning and repairs, which explains why hitis with active guthis, such as many in Lalitpur, have survived while others have vanished.
In the Lichhavi era, hitis were called kriti, or "works of art." Beyond their engineering, spouts are decorated with carvings of the sage Bhagiratha, guardian yakshyas, chaityas, and Shiva lingas, reflecting the deep intertwining of water infrastructure with Hindu and Buddhist ritual life. Landmarks like Manga Hiti (570 AD), Tusha Hiti, and Alko Hiti remain some of the oldest continuously functioning water systems in the world.
Since the introduction of piped water in the 1950s, hitis has been progressively neglected. Of 573 stone spouts recorded across the Valley in 2019, roughly 94 had already been lost, alongside 40 of 233 ponds largely due to unplanned urban construction damaging underground channels and the decline of guthi management.
As climate change and groundwater depletion strain the Valley's modern supply, engineers and heritage groups increasingly view hiti restoration such as the Nagbahal Hiti rehabilitation in Lalitpur as a low-cost, gravity-powered complement to piped infrastructure, not merely a historical curiosity.
